🧠How does ADHD affect motivation?
Lack of motivation with adhd
A friend of mine inspired me to write this article. It took me a long time to get started — actually, a very long time.🐌 Let's just say sticking to a routine isn't exactly my superpower, and with ADHD, it's an even bigger challenge. If you're reading this text, you probably know that my passion is coaching and helping people with ADHD — people like me and you.
🎢How ADHD affects my motivation: my personal experience
The last few weeks have been really tough. I felt completely exhausted, like a fly that'd hit a window. 🪰💥 I felt unmotivated and unable to write anything. Do you know that feeling? You come back from work, collapse on the couch, and you've still got a bunch of things to do. As a result, you do nothing — you're paralyzed and end up mindlessly scrolling social media or binge-watching your favorite series. 📱🛋️
This describes my state over the past few weeks.
🤔 Why do we, people with ADHD, often struggle with lack of motivation?
I became an ADHD coach because I want to help you. 🦸♀️Trust me, I get it - the daily struggles we face are real. As neurodivergent individuals, what we need the most is understanding. Sometimes, we just need a longer break to avoid burnout.🔋Push the pause button.
And, hey, I needed a break from writing.
🧠 Here's the thing: I want every article I write to contain valuable content for you. But this requires a lot - reading, researching, and putting all the pieces together. Don't get me wrong, it's fun, but it also takes a lot of energy.🔋 That's why we need to learn to take care of ourselves — only then can we slowly get back on track and somehow manage ADHD life.
⏰Plan time for regeneration: A key for ADHD
Sometimes we just need to switch to survival mode 🐻 and accept that we simply "don't feel like it". It's important not to beat yourself up about it - give yourself a break to recharge. It's totally ok. Remember, you're not alone in this. We all have bad days, but people with ADHD may experience them more frequently and with greater intensity.
The key is to find your own ways for dealing with these difficult moments and building a support system.🔑
A key strategy is scheduling time for regeneration rather than filling a calendar with activities we "should," "must," or "want" to do. Without this balance, we're at risk of burnout.
📝The "Pensieve" trick - get those thoughts out of your head
When planning your day, week, or month, start by setting aside some time to just rest and do nothing. And if your brain's screaming at you about all the stuff you need to do and you're feeling overwhelmed, grab a pen and paper and brain dump all your thoughts.
It's like "Pensieve" from Harry Potter, the magical bowl for storing memories, thoughts, and ideas. 🧙♂️ You don't have to start a fancy journal or anything - just getting your thoughts out of your head onto paper can be a huge relief. And hey, you can always toss the paper when you're done.
🎵How music helps tame thoughts with ADHD
Another method I use is... listening to music. It's a great way to both focus and —paradoxically—distract myself 😀 Music helps me break out of the flood of thoughts, but at the same time allows me to concentrate.
When I'm at the office and get distracted by random noises or conversations of other people, I put my headphones on and turn on music on Spotify.🎧Often, listening to music also helps me calm my racing thoughts and gently guides them onto a different, more productive track.
🧘♀️ADHD and Self-Care: Overcoming Challenges
Self-care, especially for people with ADHD, is extremely important. Once we plan time to recharge, we can focus on tasks more effectively. Write down only the most important things you need to do. Don't make yourself a mile-long list of chores — other things can wait. This approach will help you maintain a balance between work and rest, which is super important when you have ADHD.⚖️
🎯To sum up: Quick tips when you're feeling unmotivated:
🤷♀️ Accept that you just don't feel like doing anything - that's perfectly okay
🛌 Plan time for regeneration - it's not a luxury, but a necessity
✍️ Do a brain dump on paper - get those thoughts out of your head
🎶 Use music to improve concentration or relax
📊 Stick to the basics - don't overload yourself with a huge to-do list
🤗 Cut yourself some slack!!
